Theory of change

The project supports the establishment of agroforestry and reforestation of degraded land and riparian areas in degraded areas by working with smallholder farmers in vulnerable communities. By providing financial incentives for planting and maintaining native trees and productive crops, farmers are given the opportunity to diversify their income streams frommonoculture crops such as sugarcane and soy to grow a variety of crops such as papaya, guava, banana, coffee, avocado and mahogany. This promotes the development of economically and environmentally resilient farms.

Climate change mitigation

Reforestation using native species and the planting of agroforestry systems incorporating both native and productive species to the local ecological zone, is sequestering carbon, improving soil health and creating islands of biodiversity in an otherwise deforested and intensively cultivated region.  The project provides proof of concept that alternative models can thrive in an area dominated by large-scale monoculture agriculture.
